There are some historical structures that withstand
the test of time and prove to be an inspiration for future generations. Great
examples of such marvellous structures can be found in a place called Sanchi,
which is located in Raisen District of Madhya Pradesh in India. It has various
Buddhist monuments dating back to 3rd century, BCE, which symbolize love,
courage, peace and trust. The hill of Sanchi has around fifty monuments,
including Stupas and temples, which have been included in the list of UNESCO's
World Heritage Sites. Stupa, which literally means 'heap', resembles a mound,
and contains relics from the Buddhist period.
Prominent among the Sanchi Stupas is the 'Great
Stupa', which was commissioned by one of India's greatest emperors, Ashoka. He
had planned a religious centre in this region, and erected this wonderful
structure along with several others across the country with an aim to spread
Buddhism. During the Sunga period, this stupa was enlarged and embellished with
balustrades and stones. Beautifully carved gateways were added to this great
monument during the reign of Satavahanas in first century BCE. Tourists can
also find a beautiful temple along with a stupa which was constructed during
the Gupta period. All these structures were restored in the early twentieth
century under supervision of Sir John Marshall, who was the Director-General of
Archaeological Survey of India during 1902 to 1928.
Visitors can have a truly amazing experience of
being in one of the glorious periods in Indian history, when they walk the
areas that were frequented by thousands of monks and nuns. These very places
were sanctified by Mahendra, the son of Emperor Ashoka, who spread the message
of Buddhism to Sri Lanka. An accommodation in Kanha resort would be of great advantage for tourists as they can
visit Kanha National Park located nearby and several other tourist attractions
including the Sanchi Stupas. They would enjoy their stay in the amazing state
of Madhya Pradesh, which has almost all tourist attractions that many would
like to visit. The glorious past of India that they witness during these tours
would be one of their greatest travel experiences.
